Films: Constantine (2005)

Summary: We've seen heroes accosted by Hell in the movies. But then there are characters who really can't seem to find the best of either that place or the Heavens. Poor Constantine is the man with the plan when it comes to both sides threatening the balance.

History: John Constantine had committed suicide at a young age after being cursed with terrifying visions of half-breeds, most of which were demons in disguise. He was sent to Hell for this, but he managed to escape due to paramedics reviving him. Now, his soul is condemned to go back when his time is truly through. But in the meantime, he vents his frustration by killing demons who threaten to tip a holy wager of souls collected in Lucifer's favor. However, elsewhere the fanatically devoted angel Gabriel believes that mankind will only be worthy of redemption through major suffering, and is conspiring to release Lucifer's son Mammon into the mortal realm to wreak havoc. Only Constantine has any hope of stopping him...or her...we're flexible.

Final Fate: Just when it looks like Gabriel's plan will come to fruition and Constantine is out of the game, the man uses a suicide to talk to Lucifer himself about Mammon's plans to overthrow him. So the devil intervenes, sends his son back to Hell, and burns away Gabriel's wings, effectively rendering the angel mortal. Lucifer offers Constantine a favor, but when that turns out to be letting Mammon's host into Heaven, the man's soul is effectively absolved. Even though Lucifer heals him in retaliation, Constantine is no longer afraid of death, and is altogether a better person.

Powers/Abilities: Manipulation of reality for the angels and demons. Vermin in particular is made up of all sorts of...well, vermin.

Weakness: Anything remotely holy, though Vermin can be easily dispersed.

Scariness Factor: 4-The demons are obviously not exactly the kind of beings you want to be around. The regular ones look like emancipated corpses deprived of their brains, while Vermin will make you want to reach for the RAID immediately. Gabriel and Lucifer exude a more unsettling horror with their rather insufferably smug dispositions and deceptively pure looks. At least Lucifer is rather amusing.

Trivia: -This film mainly takes cues from the "Dangerous Habits" arc of the original DC comics.

-Originally, Constantine was going to be British like his comic self, but apparently the studio heads thought that just wouldn't sell...somehow. At least Keanu Reeves got the role in the end.
